Harold “Cap” Hiles

Harold “Cap” L. Hiles, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025. Born in Independence, Missouri, on October 24, 1928, Cap lived a life defined by service, craftsmanship, and deep devotion to family and community.
Cap spent 40 years in Minnesota before moving to Florida in the early 1990s, where he embraced retirement with the same energy and curiosity that marked his working years. He was a proud lineman for NSP/Excel Energy, dedicating his career to keeping homes and neighborhoods powered and safe. His work was more than a job – it was a calling, and he approached it with integrity and grit, earning him the title of Employee of the Year.
Outside of work, Cap was a man of many passions. He served as a devoted Boy Scout master, guiding several young men to the rank of Eagle Scout and instilling values of leadership and character. He was an avid racquetball player and a member of the National Masters Hall of Fame [ inducted in 2008 ], as well as a pickleball enthusiast – always ready for a match and known for his competitive spirit and good humor. Time spent on the St. Croix River was among his cherished memories, filled with laughter, family, and the joy of the outdoors. He was also a proud member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. In addition, Cap had a talent for remodeling homes, transforming spaces with care and craftsmanship.
Cap is survived by his wife of nearly 72 years, Barbara, whose love and partnership were the foundation of his life. Together, they raised four children: Mike Hiles (Diane), Mark Hiles, Tod Hiles (Theresa), and Carolyn Presbrey. He was a proud grandfather to Nathan Hiles (Kirsten), Kim Paulson (Mike), Brandon Hiles, Amie Buckner (Steven), Sabrina Hiles, Isaac Hiles, Alexis Presbrey (Jeremy Fahling), and George Presbrey. He was also a great-grandfather to Dominic and Lilly Paulson.
Cap will be remembered for his generous heart, his ever-present smile, and the countless ways he made life better for those around him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, and the family he loved so deeply. [Pictured below, with son Mike, in 2009]
